Nacmine Berm Realignment
Posted on Dec. 20 2024Please be aware that there will be changes to the extent of the Nacmine Berm:
The Flood Office has encountered recent challenges in acquiring the land needed for the upstream-most 150m of the proposed Nacmine Berm. These challenges arise as a result of the boundary between the privately-owned land and provincially owned land being defined by a river boundary, which has changed over the past decades.
As there are risks to project schedule and timelines, the Flood Office had our design team re-examine the function of this berm section. As this section of berm would only protect a single walk-out basement and is not needed to protect against spill into the entire community, the Flood Office determined that flood protection would be better served for this property with temporary adaptive fill such as sandbags or flood tubes.
On November 21, 2024, The Flood Office recommended to Council that this upstream 150m of berm be cancelled, along with the land acquisition process for the land. Council agreed to this recommendation, and so the Flood Office is now moving forward with a slightly shorter berm for the community of Nacmine, which will reduce the potential for regulatory delays and overall project costs. The Flood Office wants to assure the public that this decision was made with the best interests of the project in mind, aiming to reduce the potential for regulatory delays and overall project costs.
