Registration for Adult Co-ed Sports Leagues Opens September 3, 2024

Posted on Aug. 30 2024

The Town of Drumheller is hosting an inaugural adult co-ed sports league at the Badlands Community Facility (BCF) starting in October 2024. As an outcome of the Recreation Master Plan and a recent community survey, five sports leagues will be available to Drumheller and the surrounding area this fall.

Fun First Sports League will open registration for badminton, basketball, floor hockey, futsal and volleyball on September 3. Leagues will start the first week of October. Participants can register online or in person at the BCF or Drumheller Aquaplex. Registration will also be accepted at the Recreation, Arts and Wellness Exhibit (formerly the Sports Expo) on Wednesday, September 11, at the BCF’s exhibitor booth.

“Earlier this year, we conducted a community-wide survey to better understand the community’s preferences for sports leagues,” explains Rick Ladouceur, Manager of Recreation Arts and Culture. “The overwhelming response from nearly 100 participants has directly influenced our decision to launch the top five selected indoor sports this fall. We plan to continue this collaborative approach, offering a wider variety of sports in the winter, spring, and summer months. This is your league, and we're excited to see you there.”

The sports league will run for 11 weeks, on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. The Fun First Sport league also includes two play-off games - with prizes.

“Our facility closes to the public at 9:00 p.m. on weeknights,” continues Ladouceur. “Some league play will go until 10:00 p.m. to lessen the impact on our drop-in programming and facility rentals.” With the additional after-hours flexibility, he hopes the proposed times will encourage those outside the valley to participate. “We would love to see groups from Hanna, Three Hills, Trochu, Carbon and all our surrounding communities come and join.”

Individuals can register and be assigned to a team, or a “Team Captain” can register a team name, and their teammates can register for that team online or in person. If a person does not have a team but wants to participate, they can register online as a single player. The BCF will either assign them to a team that needs members or establish a new team of individual registrations coordinated by BCF.

League registrations must reach a minimum number of teams for the respective sports league to proceed. If the league is cancelled due to low enrollment, notice will be given at least 48 hours in advance, and registrants will receive a full refund or a possible rescheduled date.

Those who subscribe to a BCF or Multi-facility membership will be offered a discount on their individual registration.
